LGBTQ+ Antiquity Zine
Editorial Design, University Project, 2024
This zine was a final culmination project for an LGBTQ+ Antiquity course, a course a part of largers efforts to reevaluate and expand our understanding of human history and ancient relations.
Following the idea if gender and sexual identities are social structures in that they are a reflection of and reinforced by the surrounding discourse and social institutions, those institutions should be improved and restructured to better accommodate the lived experiences of diverse LGBTQ+ people.
At best, we do our due diligence to the authors who begged for their words to be remembered in a audience maybe different to their own and perhaps flourish.
At worst, our queer interpretations of antiquity texts, real or imagined, are sentimental anachronisms——projections of our own habits and institutions onto the past.
It is not in our capabilities to definitively stamp the texts with QUEER or NOT QUEER.
However, production of knowledge about the past is tightly bound to contemporary sociopolitics. These narratives are purposed to fill gaps in historical archives, if they are all being frameworked under the same ideas, then other archives for socio-sexual lives remain empty and uncelebrated.
This zine is built around one such story that could allow for a celebration.
